Description

Julia E. Houston West was born in Ashburnham, MA on June 22, 1832.  She began singing for Edward Everett Hale's South Congregational Church in Boston in 1856.  After briefly singing for the Old South Church, she returned to Hale's church.

As the Portland Daily Press noted on April 19, 1865, Julia was  "the leading Soprano of Boston, and the principal Soprano of the Handel and Hayden Society of that city." That year, she presented several concerts with the Mendelsson Quintette Club of Boston, including an August concert in Rutland, VT and the commencement in Middlebury, VT.

When Boston had its Peace Jubilee in 1869, Julia sang "The Star Spangled Banner."  Her performance at this event, led by Patrick Sarsfield Gilmore, brought Julia great acclaim.

Julia continued to share her musical talents around the country.  On May 26,1870, she was one of the soloists at the Ohio State Musican Convention.

In 1891, Julia became a member of the Wintergreen Club, a club for women over the age of fifty.  She sang at each meeting.

She passed away in Haveriill on April 9, 1906.
